- Menu Navigator: Modern Tex Mex -

Even if you know to steer clear of deep fried appetizers and chocolate drenched desserts, it turns out the average restaurant meal clocks in at a whopping 1,128 calories—yep, 1,128—making it easy for even the most health-savvy among us to think we’re eating well while eating out, when we’re not.

Enter Winston-Salem Wellness. Each week, we navigate Camel City’s most delicious restaurants and steer you toward the healthiest choices on menus of any type. This week, we're bringing you the dish on The Porch Kitchen and Cantina
We love them because
Opening its doors to the public in December of 2013, The Porch Kitchen and Cantina delivers a fresh taste of modern Tex-Mex cuisine to Winston-Salem. We love their thoughtful daily specials (Sweet potato & black bean quesadilla with pineapple salsa, guacamole and chips, anyone?), low price-point and TX-meets-NC laid back style. The atmosphere is undeniably fun and the delicious, specialty drinks flow freely. Did we mention that The Porch partners with local yoga studio The Breathing Room to hold a mid-day yoga class/lunch hour every Wednesday? We're sold.

What to order (appetizers)

  1. Warm chips & homemade salsa ($3). This appetizer promises enough house-made chips and crazy fresh salsa to happily satisfy a party of two, without eliminating their need to eat dinner afterwards (we've all been there).
  2. Fresh veggies & dip ($3). An easy go-to for those watching their salt intake, this side-turned-appetizer will make even the hungriest diner happy until their main course arrives.

What to order (entrees)

  1. Chinese chicken salad ($9). While the Nappa cabbage, slivered chicken and toasted almonds make this salad a no-brainer choice, it's the honey sesame soy dressing that makes it something to write home about. Packed with protein and fresh veggies, this entree pairs excellently with an ice cold margarita (it's all about balance, right?).
  2. Pumpkin chipotle chili ($8). We are self proclaimed chili experts at Winston-Salem Wellness and The Porch's pumpkin chipotle did not disappoint a single one of our testers. Ask for yours to be served with 1/2 the rice and "fixings" on the side. We promise, you won't even notice they're missing.
  3. Porch sliders ($7-9). Mix and match your own combination of "Low Country Shrimp", "Cowboy BBQ" and "Zucchini Quinoa Veggie" sliders to create a tasting plate of well rounded, complex flavors. Diners can choose a pair for $7 or three for $9.
