Who else went to (and lived for) summer camp when they were little? Burnt s'mores, color wars and endless hours of running around with your new friends? The best. When we heard about the amazing camp going on at Winston-Salem State University, we couldn't wait to share. Editor's note: This post is best read while wearing a wet bathing suit and eating a sloppy joe.
According to Meghann Evans at the Winston-Salem Journal:
The Rams Fitness Academy serves 125 or more children 10 to 12 years old from low-income families for six to eight weeks during the summer, at no cost to the families. The camp lasts from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, with kids participating in a variety of physical activities and interactive sessions designed to improve their health literacy. They will receive free breakfast and lunch. Transportation will also be available. Parents will attend a weekly class as part of the program.
Cynthia Williams Brown, an associate professor and physical education program coordinator for WSSU, said the camp would not be possible without the USDA's grant, which has allowed the university to pay staff and counselors. The project team includes about five professors, who are also working with the Maya Angelou Institute and a community advisory board."
