- We "Lift, Tone, Burn" in Reynolda Village -
The Basics: Pure Barre is a national franchise of studios dedicated to a full-body, no-impact, ballet-inspired workout. Each 55-minute class will target arms, abs, thighs, butt, and hips with moves that are sure to make you shake. Literally. Muscle fatigue to the point of shaking is all part of the magic, so don’t be discouraged if you can’t keep your legs from quaking in the first class. Tools of the trade include yoga mats, resistance tubes and the signature Pure Barre red ball. Expect fun music, upbeat instructors, and sore muscles the next day. This isn’t a cardio heavy class and you probably won’t sweat buckets – perfect for sneaking in a few plies during your lunch break. Visit the Pure Barre Winston-Salem website for full details.
The Background: Pure Barre is the largest, most established ballet barre franchise in the nation, with more than 180 studios across the country, and more opening every month. Pure Barre is a total body workout that utilizes the ballet barre to perform small, isometric movements, which burn fat, sculpt muscles and create long, lean physiques.
Pure Barre was founded by dancer, choreographer and fitness guru Carrie Rezabek Dorr. Carrie opened her first studio in the basement of an office building in Birmingham, MI in 2001. With no initial clients, staff, signage or even a bathroom, Carrie successfully grew Pure Barre into the dynamic company it is today.
The Verdict: We moved quickly from one exercise to the next, warming up and then targeting the following areas in efficient succession: arms/chest/shoulders, inner/outer thighs, seat (woo!), core and lower back. At the end of the 55-minute session we found ourselves back on the mat for some serious stretching and deep breaths. The instructors gave clear instructions, upbeat encouragement throughout class and gently assisted with technique if you found yourself in need of adjustment (we did). Overall, Pure Barre provided an awesome full-body workout that left us feeling sore the next day and inspired us to think of body-weight training in a new and innovative way. We'll be back for more!
